Life at college involves a lot of expenditure, including buying textbooks, paying school fees, paying for accommodation, and traveling expenses. As a student who likes traveling, visiting relatives or having a weekend away with friends, getting cheaper transportation can be of immense help in cutting your budget.
This is where the Amtrak student discount comes in handy. Students eligible for the discount are allowed to purchase cheaper rail passes around the U.S. and benefit from the convenience of rail transport.
As a student traveling back home during holidays or visiting another college town, or even just touring a city while on vacation, knowledge of student rail transport can be of great help.
In this article, we will discuss how the Amtrak student discount works, who is eligible for it, how one can book discounted rail passes, and what you should consider before booking the train pass.
What Is the Amtrak Student Discount?
The student discount offered by Amtrak is a special discounted fare which is meant to reduce the cost of traveling by train for the qualified students. The Amtrak student discount fare information reveals that the age range of students eligible for this discount is from 17 to 24, whereby the students are eligible for 15% off the regular full adult train fare.
This type of discounted fare is quite ideal for the students traveling regularly from their college campus to their hometown or just traveling to various destinations during weekends and break time.
This type of discount is only valid for certain trains and fares; therefore, one should check all details to be sure.
Who Is Eligible for Amtrak Student Discount Tickets?
Before searching for Amtrak student discount tickets, make sure you understand the eligibility requirements.
The standard national student discount currently includes the following conditions:
- Age requirement: Students must be between 17 and 24 years old.
- Student identification: You should have valid student identification available if requested.
- Advance booking: Eligible tickets must generally be purchased at least one day before departure.
- Eligible routes and classes: The discount applies only to qualifying services and permitted seating classes.
- Seat availability: Discounted fares may be limited on certain trains and during busy travel periods.
These requirements can vary for regional student offers. For example, some routes have separate promotions with different eligibility criteria.
If you are unsure whether your journey qualifies, check the applicable offer on Amtrak's website before paying for your ticket.
How to Get the Amtrak 15% Student Discount?
Getting the Amtrak 15% student discount is straightforward when your journey meets the offer's requirements. Follow these steps to find and book an eligible fare.
Step 1: Visit the Official Amtrak Website
Start by visiting the official Amtrak website. Enter your departure station, destination, travel date, and the number of passengers.
Choose your travel date carefully. Booking at least one day ahead is a requirement for the standard national student offer, and booking earlier may give you more options.
Step 2: Search for Available Trains
Review the available departures and compare their prices. Select a qualifying journey and check whether the student discount has been applied to the displayed fare.
Do not assume that every departure will have a discounted seat. Availability depends on the route, train, date, and applicable fare conditions.
Step 3: Apply the Student Discount When Needed
For the standard national student offer, Amtrak states that the discount can be applied automatically when you select qualifying travel.
If you are booking through the Amtrak mobile app, the published discount code is V814. Enter the code where applicable and confirm that the fare reflects the offer before completing your reservation.
Other regional student promotions may use different codes or booking instructions, so always follow the terms for your specific route.
Step 4: Review Your Ticket Details
Before making payment, confirm your travel date, departure and arrival stations, passenger information, and final ticket price.
It is also worth checking the cancellation policy and any restrictions attached to your fare. Keep your booking confirmation available and carry your student identification when travelling.
Following these steps can help you avoid booking mistakes and make the most of available Amtrak deals for students
How Much Can You Save With the Amtrak Student Discount?
The amount you save depends on the eligible fare for your selected journey.
For example, if a qualifying regular adult fare costs $100, a 15% discount would reduce the fare by $15, bringing the price to $85 before any applicable additional charges.
These numbers are examples only, and do not represent live ticket costs. The savings will vary based on the eligible fare, journey and the conditions of the offer. The discount will be applied to the eligible regular adult train fare, and not to all charges on a booking.
To get the best deal, compare eligible departure times and look at the total cost shown.
Where Can You Use Amtrak Student Discounts?
A general student discount scheme is offered by Amtrak in many of its services, but there are certain exceptions to these services.
Based on the present terms and conditions, the exceptions include selected Keystone and Pennsylvanian services, selected Midwest services, Capitol Corridor, Gold Runner and selected Amtrak Connections, among other services.
Since the eligible services may vary from time to time, it is always advisable to refer to the terms and conditions rather than assuming an eligible service.
There are also discounts for students travelling in certain areas. There is a separate Midwest Student Discount Page provided by Amtrak, besides individual discounts for regional services.
Make sure that you are eligible for the discount based on your departure station, destination station, train service and seat class.
